Preparing Your Plumbing System For The Holidays

Preparing Your Plumbing System For The HolidaysThere is much to accomplish before the holidays officially arrive. Cleaning the entire house, meal planning and preparation, decorating, and the list goes on! Did you include plumbing on your list? Likely, not. The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas are the busiest time of the year for plumbing contractors. This is because plumbing emergencies tend to arise as systems are pushed to their limits, both with water usage and the number of things going down the drains. To avoid any plumbing issues this holiday season, consider preparing ahead of time.

Stagger Water Usage

During the holiday season, there is a lot more cooking, which means more dishes. There are also more people in the households which means increased strain on the toilets, sinks, showers, and laundry systems. This increased water usage puts extra strain on the water supply lines and on the drains. To reduce the strain on your plumbing lines, consider staggering the usage of showers, etc. (not using two appliances that need water simultaneously).

Place Supplies In Designated Areas

It may seem unnecessary, but you’ll appreciate the advice at some point. Small things like having extra toilet paper on hand in the bathrooms and having a garbage can in each bathroom can help you ensure that things that shouldn’t go down the toilet, don’t. It’s also a good idea to have a plunger available, in the event your toilet becomes clogged.

Being Mindful In The Kitchen

It’s imperative that everyone know what should, and shouldn’t, be put in the drains of the kitchen sink. Food items, such as raw pumpkin, potato peelings, eggshells, pasta, gravy, and cooking grease should never be allowed to go down the drain. These items can wreak havoc on your plumbing system!

Check Drains For Proper Flow Ahead Of Time

Take the time, prior to guests arriving at the home, to check each drain for proper drainage speeds. Any drain that drains slowly should be addressed. There could be a small clog that only requires the use of a plunger to clear. There may be larger issues, such as major clogs, corrosion, or cracks and leaks that need to be addressed by a professional plumber. It will save a lot of headache and costs if you address these issues before increased water pressure is placed on your pipes.
